Messianic prophecies

The phrase "Messianic prophecies" refers to a specific type of prophecy found in the Old Testament of the Christian Bible in which prophets are describing a Messiah - a person chosen by God - who would bring salvation and peace to the ends of the earth.

The Old Testament prophets were Hebrews (Jews) who lived in the land of Israel. Their prophecies were recorded in the Old Testament, which was written between the time of Moses, about 3400 years ago, up through about the time of Malachi, which was about 2400 years.

The Messianic prophecies offered details about the Messiah so that people would be able to identify him when he appeared. For example, in Micah 5:2, there is a prophecy that said the Messiah would be born in the town of Bethlehem, in the province of Judah.

The prophet Isaiah said the Messiah would have a worldwide impact in that he would bring salvation to the ends of the earth.

Some Christian scholars, including Grant Jeffrey, say that there are more than 300 messianic prophecies in the Old Testament.

About 2000 years ago, there were Jews and Gentiles who proclaimed that Jesus was the Messiah who was promised by the Old Testament prophets. Their writings became the New Testament. They traveled far and wide to tell people the "Gospel," which means "good news" that the Messiah had come and that through him all who believe would be granted salvation and eternal life in Heaven.

Their evangelism work allowed Christianity to spread very quickly throughout parts of Asia, Africa and Europe, despite the fact that the Roman Empire was often severely oppressive to the Christian faith.

Today, Jesus is the only person widely regarded, throughout the world, as being the Messiah.
