Lamb of God

The phrase, "Lamb of God," appears only twice in the New Testament, each time as a title bestowed upon Jesus by John the Baptist.

In John 1:29; "The next day he (John the Baptist) saw Jesus coming toward him and said, 'Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.'" A lamb in the Old Testament was used as a sin or peace offering. In the books of Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers, lambs are used as sacrifices to cleanse the people of sin and to keep peace in the land.

There were two lambs sacrificed every day by the priests, one in the morning, and one in the evening, as an oblation to the Lord. A lamb was used in each Jewish household in Egypt during the tenth plague, and its blood was smeared on the doorposts, so the Lord would "Passover" that house during the plague.

When John the Baptist saw Jesus, he knew Jesus was the new sacrificial Lamb. Jesus would offer Himself as a sacrifice to end all sacrifices. Jesus would take on all our sins once and for all and allow Himself to be crucified. There is no more need for animal sacrifices, it is done, we are hereby forgiven of sin by the one final sacrifice of Jesus. Jesus was God's Lamb.
