The Messiah would be a descendant of King David

Bible passage: Jeremiah 23:5
Prophet: Jeremiah
Written: Sometime between 626-586 BC

There are many Bible prophecies involving the lineage of the Messiah, that he would be a descendant of Abraham, and that he would come from the Tribe of Judah, etc. In Jeremiah 23:5, as well as in other Biblical passages, we are told that the Messiah would be a descendant of King David, who was from the Tribe of Judah and was a descendant of Abraham.

The New Testament books of Matthew and Luke trace back Jesus' genealogy to King David. (Some scholars believe that the genealogy in Matthew is Jesus' legal line, through his adoptive father, Joseph, and that the genealogy in Luke is Jesus' bloodline through Mary).

King David reigned over the land of Israel from about 1050 BC to about 1010 BC, about 3000 years ago.

Here is Jeremiah 23:5:

"The days are coming," declares the LORD,

"when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch,

a King who will reign wisely

and do what is just and right in the land.
