She was a descendant of Levi (Numbers 26:59) and the mother of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. She was born during the Israelite's 400 year stay in Egypt. When the Pharaoh ordered all the male Hebrew children killed because of the great increase in their population, Jochebed hid Moses until he was three monthe old.

She then put Moses in "a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile." - Exodus 2:3 (NIV). When the Pharoah's daughter discovered the basket, Miriam (Jochebed's daughter) came forth and offered to find a Hebrew woman to nurse Moses. In this way Jochebed was paid to take care of her own son until he was weaned.

Then she returned Moses to the Pharoah's daughter, who raised him as her own son.
