Basemath, the daughter of Ishmael, and a sister to a woman named Nebaioth, became a wife of Esau in Gen. 36:2.

In Gen. 36:10, 13, 17, we learn that Basemath, the daughter of Ishmael, was the mother of a son named Reuel, and grandmother to Reuel's sons Nahath, Zerah, Shammah and Mizzah. The grandsons are listed as "chiefs" in Gen. 36:17.

Variants of the name Basemath include Basemeth, Bashemath and Basmath.

The name Basemath means "fragrant" or "perfumed."
