Bible passage: Matthew 24:14
Prophet: Jesus
Written: During the first century AD
In Matthew 24:14, Jesus gave a remarkable prophecy that is amazingly overlooked and undervalued by generations of believers and nonbelievers:
This gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. (Matthew 24:14, EHV)
In this prophecy, which Jesus gave in about AD 30, which is about 2,000 years ago, Jesus unmistakably was predicting that his teachings would be taught to people in every part of the world.
In other words, he was predicting that he would have a worldwide spiritual impact.
And that is a bold prediction, because the ability to have a worldwide spiritual impact, at that point in time, in AD 30, was not humanly possible. There were no lines of communication that connected each of the world’s continents.
But, his prediction did come true. During the centuries that followed, the world became interconnected. Explorers discovered sailing routes between Europe and the Americas and Oceania. Later, there were the inventions of the automated printing press, radio, television and the internet.
But even before the rise of mass-communications tools like radio, television and the internet, Christian evangelists had established churches within each of the world’s inhabitable continents.
During the first century of Christianity, Jesus’ followers had preached the gospel to people in Africa, Asia and Europe. By the 1500s, Christianity had reached people in North American and South America. By the 1700s, Christianity had reached people in Oceania.
By the 1900s, churches were built in Antarctica.
Today, Christianity is by far the world’s most widespread religion, with a presence in about 97 percent of the world’s nations.
Jesus gave his prediction during a time when its fulfillment would not have been humanly possible, and today we are surrounded by overwhelming evidence that it was fulfilled.
